Place & story
From Gurteen to St Flannan’s
Rathcabbin National School traces its origins to Gurteen’s separate boys’ and girls’ schools, dating from 1833. Its present building belongs to the years immediately after the Second World War. The school community’s anniversary announcement explains that completion had been expected in 1946, but construction delays meant the first classes took place in October 1947. [2] [3]
The school marked its seventy-fifth anniversary with a community celebration in October 2022. Its own history records the occasion as part of the continuing relationship between the school and local families. [2]
